Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet style of previous albums. It was a more ferocious, consistent effort that had an edge that was stronger than Hydra. The edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the maturation in the group. Bobby Kimball's growing ability to play was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard playing was also sharper, more complex and less akin to earlier efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live performance in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The studio album came out a few months later, and the band embarked on a long-distance tour in support of it. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old demos and tapes in search of an album that would feature songs that were never recorded before. It was released as a double-album titled Then And Now in 2001. It was the band's first album without one single track titled "A". The album also contained a previously unreleased track "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and the vocalist Williams was suffering from a severe case of laryngitis that limited his singing abilities.
